Unconditional love does not exist unless it’s a parent/child relationship. All romantic love is conditional. Even if the partner stays out of loyalty for whatever reason, the love doesn’t stay. The love turns into resentment and bitterness. Those feelings may be buried or smothered, masked by passive aggressive compliance but they are there. They linger, simmering underneath the facade, until the day the trigger is pulled and there is no mask to hide behind.
