The media magnifies the negative so we as a society perceive the world as if the sky is constantly falling. For example, I do not know if more kids are trafficked or stolen today than they were twenty years ago but if I log into Facebook all I see are posts sayings someone is missing. The post could be a year old, reposted by someone who believes it is new and the person could have already been found but without that background knowledge and the constant sharing and oversharing, appears to the public that people are going missing at an alarming rate. Social media is media too and it can totally distort our view of the world.
