It matters because for some reason being black is viewed as less human and some look at blacks as if we’re animals. I have been told my whole life that “You’re pretty for a black girl or dark-skinned girl” even by black people as if darker is ugly somehow. We’ve been programmed to view black as bad and it is going to take a lot more work to change that.
I was twelve years old when I watched the riots on television after the Rodney King beating. Now, I’m 41 years old and it appears we have a long way to go but things are changing. I hope that change includes bringing George Floyd’s murderers to justice. The officers that stood by and didn’t say “Come on man, that’s enough, get up” to Derek Chauvin are just as guilty as he is.
